Concerning the history of the letter W, in the Middle Ages, the joining of two Vs (hence the French name, double v) or two Us (in English: double u) became systematic. As a result, in Latin texts, proper nouns of Germanic origin had to be given an exact, fixed spelling to render the [w] sound.
